The Minnesota Army National Guard, Minnesota State parks Service, and local high schools throughout southwestern Minnesota have formed a strong partnership over the past 20 plus years. One of the outcomes of this partnership is a unique opportunity for Minnesota National Guard Soldiers to teach Army Land Navigation techniques to high school students as a way to get them outside and exploring the world around them in Kilen Woods State Park. This course is completed using UTM Maps, Military Protractor and Compass to give the students a useful life skill and challenge all in one.
Army Land Navigation is the foundational tactical skill of moving accurately from one point to another across varied terrain using a map, compass, protractor, and terrain association. In modern contested operational environments where adversaries possess advanced electronic warfare capabilities to degrade or deny Global Positioning System (GPS) signals, mastery of these analog techniques is critical for mission success. Proficiency in land navigation ensures that units can maintain situational awareness, maneuver effectively to secure objectives, and synchronize movements without relying on vulnerable electronic systems. Ultimately, this core competency guarantees that Soldiers remain lethal, survivable, and capable of operating independently across complex and degraded battlefields.
